On 31st of October, World Savings Day is celebrated. Its main purpose is to raise public’s awareness of the importance of savings both for modern economies and for normal people.

The holiday was set up on 31st of October, 1924 during the 1st International Savings Bank Congress in Milano, Italy. It originally was established to inform populace about the idea of saving their money, rather than keeping it at home.

World Thrift Day, as it is also known, reached its popularity peak after WW2 in years 1955-1970. In some countries, due to its popularity, it became a national tradition, for example in Austria, where mascot associated with the holiday reached a higher degree of brand awareness then the country’s president. The mascot, which is known as “Sparefroh”, even got a street named after himself.

Each year’s celebration also has a specific theme, and this year it was “When you save a bit, big things follow”.

  1. It sounds so nicely old-fashioned, compared to the contemporary ideas of making money through dodgy bonds and gambling on currency standing!
Does this holiday have any chance to compete with Halloween?

    1. Unfortunately no, this holiday has always been overshadowed by Halloween, and probably will only have a chance in countries like Austria, where it is still to this day rather popular.
