On 14th
of November, World Diabetes Day is celebrated all around the globe. Its goal
is, as usually is with these kinds of holidays, to raise awareness about
importance of confronting diabetes as a critical global health issue.
It was
created in 1991 by International Diabetes Federation and World Health
Organization in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat
posed by diabetes. It became an official UN holiday in 2006. The date of the
holiday was chosen in order to commemorate Sir Frederick Banting, who
co-discovered insulin in 1922, and whose birthday is on 14th of
November.
Each year’s
celebrations also has a specific theme tied to it, and in 2020 it is “The Nurse
and Diabetes”.
Some activities we can perform to get involved in the celebration include: organizing “Learn about diabetes” event in schools, or doing an online test to learn about risks connected to type 2 diabetes.
Thanks for the test. I am probably on risky ground here so I should do it :-)
