On
12th of September, Programmers' Day is celebrated internationally.
It's origin goes back to the year 2007, when it was firstly celebrated to
honour programmers across the world. For some time, it was set on 7th
of January, until it was changed to be held on the 256th day of the
year. This is a number of distinct values that can be represented within an
8-bit byte, and 256 is the highest power of 2 that is less than 365, the number
of days in a year. On this day, programmers greet themselves on various forums
and social media by words “Happy Programmers’ Day”, and sometimes organize
special events related to this holiday, It’s worth noting, that it was
recognized as a public holiday in Russia in 2009.
A past event that took place on 12th of September was a Battle of Marathon, when combined Greek armies defeated an army of Persian king Darius I. It was practically the end to the First Persian War.
I had no idea there was a holiday devoted to programmers. If IT guys have their day, I wonder what professions don't!
