An unknown holiday - 19th of September
From this day onward, I will be writing
about a holiday OR a past event, simply because of the fact that 150 words is
not much space, and definitely not as much to describe some things as I would
like. The information if it will be a holiday or a past event this week will be
in the title, but from my experience I can already say that I will most likely
be writing more about unknown holidays, because they are simply more
interesting.

On 19th of September,
International Talk Like a Pirate Day is celebrated. It all started when two
friends - John Baur and Mark Summers - were playing racquetball on June 6th,
1995. In the heat of the game, one of them shouted "Arrr!", which
would be followed by other of many pirates’ phrases and quotes. They decided
that they needed a new national holiday – Talk Like a Pirate Day. But because
the 6th of June was already “taken” by the anniversary of World War
II’s D-Day, they instead came up with 19th of September, which to
their knowledge was the only day not already taken by another important holiday
or anniversary. They reached out to Dave Barry, nationally syndicated humour
columnist and winner of Pulitzer, to be their spokesman and promotor of the
holiday, and he agreed. This holiday may not be as popular as some of the others,
but there are still people who on this day specifically use pirate language,
like asking for a change from golden doubloon in a shop.
It would be nice to give some more examples of 'pirate language'. If it has a special holiday, there should be a dictionary available, is there?
OdpowiedzUsuńThere are a few piratem dictionaries, but i didn't include more pirate phrases, because of too mamy words in the paragraph already, but I will try to include more words and phrases connected to a specific holiday if I can find any.
