On 26th
of September, a European Day of Languages is celebrated all across Europe, along
with the worldwide celebration of International Day of Foreign Languages, of
which the first one is more popular. The idea of organising a campaign which
main goal was to convince general public of the importance of learning new
languages was born in 1997. European Day of Languages (EDL) was firstly
celebrated in 2001, which was the European Year of Languages. After the end of
this project, the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers decided to set up
both of these holidays as permanent and celebrated on 26th of
September. Its main purpose is to promote plurilingualism and linguistic
diversity, and generally draw attention to Europe’s cultural diversity. It is
oft celebrated in schools by, for e.g. playing a version of “Who Wants To Be A
Millionaire”, or by organising a food market, on which students taste small
portions of foreign food and guess from which country it is.
We use to have a 'Day of Languages' in our school, too. Food stalls, competitions and all. Sadly, not this weird year.
OdpowiedzUsuńWhere did you get the word 'oft'? My dictionary says it's "old use or formal", which means you using it sound a bit .... odd/ridiculous/pretentious (choose your option). So be careful.
Oh, I didn't know that we had this holiday in our school too, hope it will take place next year. Also, thank you for correcting me with the word "oft".
