On 10th of October, World Mental Health Day is celebrated all over the globe.
Its overall
objective is, as the name suggests, to
raise awareness of mental health issues around the world, and mobilize efforts
to support mental health care in many countries. It provides an opportunity for
all mental healthcare workers to talk about their work, and what needs to be
done for the quality of mental healthcare to increase worldwide.
It was
firstly observed on 10th of October, 1992, and officially set up as
an annual activity of World Federation for Mental Health by the then Deputy
Secretary General Richard Hunter.
For the
first 3 years, it had no specific theme, and was only celebrated by a two-hour
telecast broadcast globally. In 1994, a theme of the Day was set up to be “Improving
the Quality of
Mental Health Services throughout the World”. A unique theme for each year’s celebration
was also started, e.g. “Women and Mental Health” in 1996, or “The Effects of
Trauma and Violence on Children and Adolescents” in 2002.
And what was the focus this year?
