This week's news - March 13th
Foreign
ministers in the G7 group have recently condemned China’s decision to
fundamentally erode democratic elements of the electoral system in Hong Kong.
PRC’s parliament approved on Thursday a draft decision to change Hong Kong’s
electoral system via introducing a mechanism to vet politicians’ loyalty to the
government. These actions are part of Beijing’s effort to consolidate its grip
over the Asian financial hub.
In my
opinion, these actions show how dangerously little China cares about the “one
country, two systems”, which was one of the main grounds on which UK gave Hong
Kong back to China in the 90s. The overall reaction of various countries was in
my opinion good, largely condemning the decision, but it seems as if the
Chinese government didn’t even care about other country’s opinion, they’re just
doing what they want, knowing that no one will stop them. What if they don’t
stop on Hong Kong, and will try to integrate other beings into itself, like
Taiwan?

Not that I want to defend the People's Republic of China, but let's just remember what the story of Hong Kong is.
OdpowiedzUsuńIt was leased to the British Empire for 99 years, which ended in 1998, and was returned to China then (not doing that, the UK would've broken international law and provoked a serious conflict). Whatever China promised to do with Hong Kong then doesn't really matter - it's their territory and they can do as they please, passing laws they find convenient. And keeping Hong Kong's special status would be rather demoralising for the rest of Chinese citizens, who don't enjoy the same freedoms.
