An observation - September 13th
A few days ago, when I was on a bus
on my way to school, I saw a three people of Muslim faith – two women and one
man – getting on a bus. I tried to not look at them, in order not to be
perceived as to be “staring” at them.
Reflecting on this later made me realize I
was ashamed of myself. I tried not to look at them so that other people wouldn’t
think I was staring at them due to thinking they were different from other
people on the bus, but by looking away from them, in my mind, I made them
different from other people, since most of the time don’t have problems with
randomly looking at other people in public. Sometimes we lose ourselves so much in wanting to perceive everyone in the same way, that we stop doing so.
It's all quite complicated, isn't it? Navigating the requirements of political correctness, our own habits and stereotypes and the demands of common decency is challenging.
