This week's news - November 29th

Israel’s top court has ruled that a six-year-old boy who survived a cable car crash in northern Italy must be returned to his relatives in Italy. He was abducted from his paternal aunt by his maternal grandfather on 11 September, after the boy’s brother and parents lost their lives in the crash. The court ruled that he must not be removed from his “habitual residence”. In my opinion, it is good that after two months of living in an unfamiliar country with people he didn’t know very well the boy is finally returned to his home country and to his close relatives, who were given custody of the boy by the court after his parents died in May. I understand the desire of his Israeli relatives to have the boy with them, as they most likely think that he could suffer psychologically from being so close to the place his parents died in, but at the same time I think that being separated from his legal guardians and his home country could also have a significant effect on the boys psyche.

Jacob Chansley, who took part in the deadly 6 January attack on Capitol by Donald Trump’s followers, was sentenced to 41 moths in prison, after pleading guilty to charges in September. He is best known for wearing a horned helmet and a fur hat during the riot, even receiving being nicknamed “QAnon shaman”. I think it’s good that people who were the icons during the Capitol riot and are at least partially responsible for the overall violence and deaths of a few police officers are finally punished. Even though, I think that being sent to prison for almost 3.5 years for something like this is a bit extreme, especially considering that you can be sentenced less time for crimes like manslaughter or rape. The fact that the man is diagnosed with several serious mental illnesses should also be considered, and I am wondering if it is really fair that a person who may not have had a full understanding of what they were doing is given one of the harshest sentences possible for the crime. An observation - November 1st

Some time ago when I was on a bus returning home from school, I noticed a teenager getting shouted on by an elderly man, who was also swearing profusely while doing it. Apparently, the reason for this was that earlier this teenager used a mild curse, and the man heard it, and thought the teenager was disrespectful. This situation made me realise just how hypocritical and self-entitled some people may be. Of course, the teenager shouldn’t have used the word, but it’s no reason for him to get verbally abused, especially after he apologised multiple times throughout this situation. Some people demand respect, even when they themselves have none for other people. I noticed that nowadays this is especially true for teenagers and some of the older generations. Most of the teenagers are likely grow out of it with age, but the elderlies are much less likely to change their ways, especially since they were taught that elders deserve a special amount of respect. They do, but some apparently th...
